Notification ofthe newly established queue for electricity saving after the Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake and fee collection for this fiscal year
March 31, 2011

To all users,

We are very sorry for the victims of the Tohoku-Pacific Ocean Earthquake and pray that the disaster-stricken areas will recover as soon as possible.

Owing to the effects of this earthquake, this Center examined different measures and conducted a test operation to address electricity saving in late March.

We have posted a notification on details of the test operation on Twitter (schgc) and the top page of www.hgc.jp. It has been confirmed that the operation can be implemented with certain stability, and thus we notify the operation details as follows:

Since power demands are high during the day on weekdays, we will reduce the number of computation nodes during these periods for this fiscal year.

It is expected that the shared queue job processing capacity will drop during the day with this reduction. To address this problem, we have started operation of nighttime queues (night.q, 8 hours) and holiday queues (holiday.q, 48 hours) this week, in order to effectively utilize the nighttime and holidays, when power demands are relatively low. We have also increased the maximum execution period for sjobs.q from 1 hour to 8 hours.

There will be no procedure changes in the normal use of our services. If jobs are input without specifyingthe queue, they will be input as jobs that can be executed for up to 48 hours in an available space of mjobs.q or holiday.q.

The newly established night.q, jobs will be input for execution up to 8 hours by specifying the conventional sjob.

Since night.q will have the largest number of slots available on weekdays, high efficiency will be achieved by using it mainly for jobs of 8 hours or less. (For specific job input procedures, please see ■■ Job input procedures ■■ below.)

Furthermore, it was impossible to apply for data transfer and service renewal by March 25,owing to the effects of the earthquake. We have therefore decided to consider this a transition period and to not charge fees for April(users who applied for annual lump sum payment will be charged the monthly fee for 11 months). While we plan to continue this operation mode for this fiscal year, we are ready to handle the situation flexibly, depending on the power supply from Tokyo Electric Power Company and the University policy on utilization of electric power.

We will continue to devote our efforts to improve our supercomputer system. We ask for your kind understanding.

Period of use: 22:00 to 6:00 the following morning on weekdays
Upper limit of execution period: 8 hours
Inputting procedures: Jobs will be input into night.q or sjobs.q by specifying the option as follows:

qsub -l sjob [shell script name]

  * Jobs in execution by night.q will be returned at 6 o’clock the following morning. The returned jobs will be rescheduled and re-executed.

■ Holiday queue (holiday.q)
Period of use: 22:00 on Friday to 6:00 on Monday
         * The period of use may vary depending on consecutive holidays, etc.
Upper limit of execution period: 48 hours
Inputting procedures: The jobs will be input into holiday.q or mjobs.q, unless an option is specified as follows:

         qsub [shell script name]

  * Jobs in execution by holiday.q will be returned at 6 o’clock on Monday. The returned jobs will be rescheduled and re-executed.

[Change in upper limit of execution period for sjobs.q]
The upper limit of execution period for sjobs.q has been changed to match night.q, as follows:
  Before change: 1 hour
  After change: 8 hours

To input jobs only in the specified queue, specify the option as follows:
・To input only in night.q,
qsub -l sjob -q night.q [shell script name]

・To input only in holiday.q,
qsub -q holiday.q [shell script name]
